Canadian Federal Employees Use Free American Express Air Miles Credit Card

Canadian Federal Employees Use Free American Express Air Miles Credit Card

Being a Canadian federal employee entitles you to a lot of benefits, some of which are rather unexpected. One of these benefits is the American Express AIR MILES credit card. When you are employed by the Canadian federal government, you are immediately issued with an American Express AIR MILES credit card which you are supposed to use for all your travel when you are on government business. Issuance of this credit card to you on behalf of the Canadian government will not in any way, neither positively nor negatively, affect your personal credit rating.

The American Express AIR MILES credit card, which is a product of AMEX Bank of Canada, is issued only to Canadian citizens and its design concept was targeted towards those frequently traveling on Canadian Airlines. The Canadian federal government is the owner of Canadian Airlines, which also has tie-up arrangements with other airlines operating in Canada, two US airlines (American Airlines and Northwest Airlines), the German airline, Lufthansa, and the Dutch airline, KLM.

The important guideline is that employees must pay for their travel expenses only by means of their individual American Express AIR MILES credit card. This is the reason why each card is issued in the name of the individual employee. This directive does not, however, imply that employees may travel indiscriminately; the parameters for using the American Express AIR MILES credit card are very strict and consistently applied.

You may not pay for personal purchases with the American Express AIR MILES credit card and if you’re found doing this you will face serious administrative charges. Just as important, any travel booking to be paid for with your American Express AIR MILES credit card must have prior approval from the authorized management personnel in your government office. Unauthorized travel using the American Express AIR MILES credit card will have serious consequences.

Payments for all travel expenses paid for with the American Express AIR MILES credit card will not be for your account, provided that you have obtained prior approval for the travel activity in the prescribed manner. Once you receive your billing statement, you are supposed to request for reimbursement of the corresponding amount. The reimbursement should then be used to pay off the entire balance on your American Express AIR MILES credit card immediately. It is absolutely intolerable for you to miss payments or to carry balances.

Does this arrangement reduce paperwork? Theoretically, the fact that each employee carries an individual American Express AIR MILES credit card should result in tons of paperwork being eliminated. In practice, this has not been the case. The traditional procedures for getting prior trip approvals, booking travel arrangements, and then submitting the needed paperwork to support requests for reimbursement continue to be in effect. What has been removed is the necessity to have somebody, either the government or you the employee, to advance the money to cover travel expenses.

Though there is no real reduction in paperwork, federal employees are still better off. The use of American Express AIR MILES credit card allows even administrative staff to stay in five-star hotels and go around the country many times during the year. And, with your American Express AIR MILES credit card you will have access to all other services that the card issuer provides to cardholders, government employees or not.

Third of Overseas American Deaths Because of Car Crashes

Third of Overseas American Deaths Because of Car Crashes

In the United States, it has been well known that one of the major causes of death is car crashes and vehicular accidents. And such a situation seems to be also quite applicable even for Americans who are overseas. This is according to a study done by the Campaign for Global Road Safety.

The group has just sent out an analysis of data that they have been able to gather straight right from the State Department. They have been able to take in and analyze information on the leading causes of healthy US citizens who are abroad for business or travel. And the results did show that car crashes and vehicular mishaps is the leader and for every three Americans abroad who meet death, one is involved in a car crash.

The results of the study that the Campaign for Global Road Safety made were released as part of the very first Global Road Safety Week which is spearheaded by the United Nations. The report has been given the title “Road Crash Deaths of American Travelers: The Make Roads Safe Report; An Analysis of US State Department Data on Unnatural Causes of Death to US Citizens Abroad (2004-2006)”. It has also been implied in the study that car crashes still remain number one over other causes like homicides or maybe other types of accidents.

Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr is the director of the Make Roads Safe for North America and she also is the author of this recently released report. On the results of the study, she remarks, “When we travel, we protect ourselves with vaccines and we’re careful about what we eat and drink, but the real hidden danger is being killed on the road.” And this may not be because foreign vehicles may not use the Centerforce clutch or other parts but may be because of the attitude of all drivers and motorists when they are on the road.

Dinh-Zarr does continue to express, “The death of Americans on roads overseas is just one symptom of the road crash epidemic around the world. This is a public health, transportation, and human rights issue. And we’re not just talking about numbers – each death and injury has a devastating effect on a family so we need to act now or millions will suffer.”

Millions of American Drives While Tired

Millions of American Drives While Tired

In a study conducted by GMAC Insurance, it was revealed that millions of American drivers do not practice what they preach. This is because many American drivers believe that driving while tired is a dangerous thing to do. But in spite of that, millions are still driving while they are tired.

GMAC Insurance polled 5,175 licensed American drivers from all fifty states of the country and also includes drivers from the District of Columbia. After the poll, the study found out that 96 percent of the respondents agree that driving while tired is risky. But 65 percent of the respondents admitted that they drive even though they are tired. The 65 percent approximately corresponds to 130 million Americans.

The result of the study is quite alarming. An issue that the result of the study has raised is the safety of the general public comes the Fourth of July holiday. It is estimated that millions of Americans will be hitting the road during that holiday. The fact that millions of Americans are driving while tired supports the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) figures which says that July 4 is the deadliest driving day of the year. According to the institute, the third of July ranks as the second deadliest driving day of the year.

The summer season is also a time when many Americans travel long distances. With the fact that many Americans drive even when they are tired might increase the number of traffic accidents in the following months. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Americans travel longer distances in August compared to other months.

Gary Kusumi, the Chief Executive Officer and president of GMAC Insurance has this to say about the result of their study: “Everybody has their own personal threshold, but we believe that driving seven hours without significant breaks is pushing the limit. And there’s no question that driving while fatigued is dangerous. More than 100,000 crashes each year are caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel.”

It is, of course, imperative that a driver should be well rested if he or she is going to drive over long distances. Tired drivers behind a steering wheel not only endanger himself and the occupants of his or her car but also other motorists and pedestrians. Even with highly efficient brake parts such as those found at Active Brakes Direct would be rendered useless if a driver falls asleep while driving.

Casey Mears, a well-known NASCAR driver who drives the No. 25 National Guard/GMAC Chevrolet Impala, also has a few thoughts of his own to share with motorists who are pushing the limit. “When people hit the roads for long trips this summer, they really need to keep tabs on their level of fatigue,” said Mears who recently won the longest race of the Nextel Cup season at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

“It doesn’t pay to skimp on sleep, and coffee and cat naps are only a quick fix. Getting plenty of rest is one of the keys to staying safe and being at your best, whether you’re driving down the interstate or making laps around the race track,” added Mears.

Mears offers tips like planning ahead, avoiding alcohol, taking a buddy on a trip, limiting driving after midnight and knowing when to stop driving. These tips if followed by American drivers would result to fewer traffic accidents.
