Although Reno, Nevada was the gambling capital of the United States before the 1960s, the rapid expansion and growth of Las Vegas has caused a severe downturn in the Reno gaming industry. Added to Reno’s troubles are also the high rate of growth in California’s Indian gaming sector, while American Airlines’ buyout of Reno Air caused the area to become downgraded to an airport ‘spoke’ rather than a central hub ? meaning that fewer and fewer people would be directed to Reno on their regular flight path.

Since American Airlines’ complete disposal of the Reno Air fleet in 2001, many old casinos in the city have been either closed or torn down. Famous names such as the Mapes, Harold’s Club, Nevada Club, and Palace Club are now only empty lots, while smaller casinos such as the Riverboat, King’s Inn, Golden Phoenix, Cornstock, Virginian, Money Tree, and the Sundowner exist only in memory ? abandoned buildings rest where a bustling swath of casinos once cut their way through the center of town.

There are currently only two local casinos which have experienced any amount of significant growth, and these are the Atlantis Casino and The Peppermill. In 2005, the Peppermill began a $300-million expansion project on their hotel, intending to create a Tuscan-style atmosphere and theme ? including such things as a 600-room hotel tower completely composed of suites, as well as a resort-style pool complex, restaurants, lounges, and 62,000 sq.ft. of convention space. In fact, the Peppermill was also named the most outstanding Reno gaming property by both Nevada and Casino Player magazines.

Fortunately for the area, although gaming has certainly decreased, the city has moved toward holding larger events throughout the course of the year, which have been received with great success. Events such as the classic car convention and rally called ‘Hot August Nights’, as well as an annual ‘Great Reno Balloon Race’ each September, have greatly increased tourism to the area and has seen a move toward revitalization of Reno’s downtown. The city is slowly becoming friendlier to tourists, and it is hoped that this trend will continue as Reno’s annual events grow even larger each year.

After checking out all the websites we could find of places on Koh Tao, there was one place that we really liked the look of, and that was the Jamahkiri Resort & Spa, but what clinched it for us, was a friend of a friend who had stayed there, and said it was fabulous.

What we found was a very plush resort, with everything you could ask for in a bigger resort, just kind of scaled down.

It overlooks the beautiful Shark Bay, and the Jamahkiri could best be described as a treasure. It is totally isolated and the bay it is itself in, is quite unspoilt. The room was everything we hoped it would be, in a pavilion style, with Thai décor, with spa-bath, flat screen TV, DVD player, safe, and neat balcony overlooking the bay.

Most importantly the bed was comfortable, with the kind of linen sheets that just feels quality!!
Although there is no beach as such, there is a pier, and you can snorkel here, the snorkelling isn’t bad at all, or take a kayak and go exploring.

If you want to go diving, then a short walk along the shore to the next cove will bring you to three or four diving schools.

The food in the restaurant was excellent, if a little limited, and the service from the staff extremely good indeed,.

The spa with good reason is rated the best on the island, so altogether a very relaxing place, but your leg muscles will need to be good, because of the walking up and down you will do.

We would certainly recommend the Jamhakiri Resort & Spa as a honeymoon destination, and for couples but not enough for families with small children.

Please however be aware that The Jamahkiri Resort & Spa is only really accessible why four wheel drive vehicles, and if you want to eat out in town, then it’s free to get there but the last free lift back is 8.30pm, and it is a very bumpy twenty minute ride down what is no more than a track.

This isolation, whilst it is attractive, you do need to escape in the evenings because the dinner menu becomes repetitive.

The Siberian Express across Russia to Moscow has been described as the best train ride in the world. Maybe not anymore. The Tibetan Railway from Qinghai to Lhasa has thrown its hat in the ring. It will eventually be extended to the Nepalese border, only an hour’s drive from Kathmandu.

Some things you might want to think about before boarding:

Price: Tibetan Railway tickets are CHEAP, ranging from US$49 to $180 depending on how much comfort you require and where you’re coming from. A soft sleeper from Beijing, a 48 hour journey, cost only $158 in early 2007. Although a travel agency might charge more than that, the frugal can purchase a ticket directly from the station.

Visas: A China visa is of course necessary. Contrary to some information on the Internet, though, a Tibet Permit is also required for foreigners. They are relatively inexpensive and not difficult to obtain, and can be arranged through a travel agency.

Altitude Sickness: Tibet is often called the “roof of the world”, and the Tibetan Railway is the world’s highest altitude railway. Nearly 1,000 kilometers of track have been laid at over 4,000 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level, and Tanggula Station, at 5,068 meters (over 15,000 feet) above sea level, is the highest railway station in the world at. Lhasa sits on a high desert plateau. Accordingly, altitude sickness is a very real danger. Fortunately the gradual acclimatization of going by rail rather than by air reduces this risk substantially. I flew to Lhasa from Chengdu in 1994 and got altitude sickness from my first breath of Tibetan air. I stayed that way for the rest of the trip, and then spent the next 10 years wanting to go again, because it was worth every single minute of discomfort. Be warned, however ? extreme altitude sickness can be life-threatening, and the only treatment is to get to a lower altitude as soon as possible. Accordingly, a trip to Tibet may not be appropriate for the elderly, the infirm, and people with lung ailments.
