Cruises For Fun And Excitement

If you have never been on a cruise before, you are in for the time of your life. There are cruises going anywhere and everywhere that there is water.

Destinations are as exotic as the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe. No driving. No packing and repacking from place to place. All the food you care to eat. Gambling, dancing and all kinds of night life. And best of all, no phones!

I am told it is a shopper’s paradise. I don’t know as I could care less about shopping, but don’t tell my wife and daughters. There are “discounts” and items you wouldn’t find at home. Something for everyone.

I go for the adventure. Snorkeling, sightseeing and visiting places that I have only dreamed about. It gives real images to my thoughts of how I dare to escape the rat race.

You can plan for many months for such a vacation or you can go at the last minute. Real savings are found in the last minute deals. You should never, ever pay rack prices on a cruise. Those prices are only for the uninitiated.

Once on board, you will have access to 24 hour free food including international cuisine. There are three scheduled meals a day and many opportunities to eat in between. I would recommend everyone go to the scheduled dinner. It usually has a different theme for each night of the cruise. The wait staff is superb, they perform a show (based on the theme) for you and you get to meet people from other parts of the world. Hint: Dress up at night and don’t go too casual. That is part of the experience.

When you aren’t eating, there is lounging by the pool soaking up the sun and the suds. There are movies, shows and activities for all ages. You can visit the spa, exercise, read a book at the library or do anything else you want. It is your free time after all!

Every cruise ship has ports of call where they dock for a period of time. Once at port, you can go ashore and do whatever you like or you can go on any number of planned excursions the ship provides. You can even stay aboard and do nothing, but I suggest you get out and see the world if you have never seen that portion of God’s acre before.

From crystal blue water and their reefs of fish, to historic places to mountains and icebergs, I have seen it all … You should too.

The History of Kayaks

Canoeing and Kayaking go back to the dawn of human culture. The word “kayak” literally means “hunter’s boat.” The kayak was useful for transport, but it was a miraculous hunting tool, facilitating a quiet approach towards one’s desired prey. The covered deck of the kayak made it more sea-worthy and better able to shed waves than the traditional canoe. Kayaks are mostly used during summer months, primarily for hunting and fishing.

Similar to the kayak, the umiak is a larger boat which can carry up to 20 people. The umiak and the kayak existed side by side, both finding useful niches for transporting and hunting throughout history.

Kayak design varied according to the specific needs of inhabitants of particular regions. For instance, early kayaks designed by inhabitants surrounding the Bering Straight were wider and shorter. Whereas the kayaks from Greenland were sleek and low. Kayaks from Baffin Island were wider and longer. (more…)

Steps For A Safe Cruise

Keep your dream vacation from turning into anything but. When you’re going on a cruise, whether it’s a family vacation, a honeymoon, or just some time away, use a little common sense to keep yourself and your valuables safe.

Victims of theft aboard cruise ships can run into yards and yards of red tape attempting to prosecute the responsible parties. First of all, most cruise ships require attendees to sign a waiver, keeping the cruise line from being held liable for crimes that occur on board. Secondly, many cruise ships are registered in foreign countries, while passengers (including the criminals) are from various locales. Meanwhile, the ship is sailing in water owned by still another jurisdiction. This often puts the area of responsibility into, well, murky waters. Finally, once passengers leave the cruise ship, it is virtually impossible to trace your stolen belongings. Where they end up is anyone’s guess.

So, be smart. Stay safe, and follow some simple rules to keep theft from occurring in the first place.
Keep good records. Before you leave home, make an inventoried list (photographs are helpful) of everything you have with you, and keep it someplace safe. Record credit card and bank account numbers, and leave the list at home. Do bring along a list of phone numbers to all of your financial institutions (and a phone card if necessary) in case a credit card disappears; that way you’ll be able to report the loss while still on board and avoid any fraudulent use. Most importantly, if you don’t need something, then don’t take it with you. The less you have to worry about, the easier it is to keep track of everything you’re carrying.

Simply putting a suitcase under the bed in your cabin is no defense against a determined thief. On many cruise ships, the door locks are changed less often than those at a hotel, and your room may not be as secure of a place as you think. If you can’t leave your valuables at home, make use of the ship’s safe. Do not carry wallets in back pockets- pickpockets and purse-snatchers are possible anywhere, even on a cruise ship. Consider investing in an under-the-clothing money belt, which keeps your cash safe and provides the added benefit of not allowing you to forget your wallet lying on the table somewhere! Avoid displaying any valuables or cash you have with you, and invest in plain but sturdy luggage that does not draw attention to itself.

It may sound scary, but consider the fact that you take all of these precautions and many more when you venture to a new city and stay at a hotel. A cruise ship is a lot like a floating city, full of people from all walks of life, and a little precaution can help save your valuables. Not to mention your vacation!

Cruises and Cuisine Go Hand In Hand

cruisesFrom weekend workshops to full-service culinary academies, men and women are drawn to cooking lessons.  Now you can incorporate your love for cooking with your dreams of high seas adventure because more and more cruise ships are offering cooking-related events onboard.

Originally attributed to small cruise ships that needed an incentive to gain bookings, cooking cruises have grown over the years and are now found aboard large vessels.  One of the most recent announcements is from Holland America.  Working in conjunction with Food & Wine magazine, Holland America’s Culinary Arts Center will offer demonstrations and seminars from world-renowned chefs, wine experts, cookbook authors and more.

A fleet-wide enhancement, the Culinary Arts Center will be retrofit onto all 13 existing ships and will also be incorporated into the upcoming 14th ship due to launch in summer 2008.  Each Culinary Arts Center will include theater-style seating, state-of-the-art show kitchen, plasma screens that allow every participant to see, a display counter for easy viewing and space for guests to participate in preparing some of the dishes. Upgrades to all Holland America’s ships will be complete by summer 2006 allowing each ship to include Culinary Arts Center activities during each cruise. (more…)

Australian Tall Ship Cruises

If you are looking for a unique and fun way to tour the coast of Australia, then a cruise upon a tall ship is the perfect adventure for you. Tall ships are large sailing vessels traditionally rigged with a number of masts and sails. Tall ships include clippers, barquentines and schooners. They conjure up images of times long past, of pirates, conquistadors and overseas explorers. In Australia there is an impressive fleet of such vessels and tours are widely available. For the sailing experience of a lifetime, don’t miss out on an Australian tall ship cruise.

The best Australian cruises sail in the waters of Queensland, off the northeastern coast. The tropical waters of the Coral Sea are of a crystal blue and are dotted with small islands to explore. The snorkeling is superb, especially in the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Tall ship cruises are fully equipped to allow the visitors to snorkel and even scuba dive from some vessels. While the ship is anchored near one of the innumerous islands, passengers can swim and dive off the deck. During the voyage, guests can sunbathe on deck and even help hoist the sails and steer the ship. A tall ship cruise promises to be an exciting experience for all those onboard!
